The rating scale for depression developed by Hamilton was adjusted to 173 Korean patients with primary depressive illness for the purpose of clinical use of the scale in Korea.
Eighty three of the subjects were male and g0 female, ranging from 14 to 78 years in age. C linical diagnoses were reactive depression in 92 cases (53%), endogenous and bipolar depressions in 33 (19%), involutional depression in 30 (17%) and miscellaneous depression in 18(11%).
Matrix of correlations was factor-analysed after rotation of principal components with Kaiser normalization method and five factors were extracted. Factor 1 represented by Initial insomnia, Middle insomnia. and Delayed insomnia could be named as Insomnia. Factor 2 characterized by Depression, Guilt, Agitation and Psychic anxiety could be named as Agitated Depression, and factor 3 by Depression, Guilt, Suicide, Loss of work and interest and Retardation could be done as Retarded Depression. Factor 4 represented by Somatic symptom (G-I), Hypochondria, Loss of weight and General somatic symptom could be easily named as Somatization, whereas factor 5 with dominant evidence of Genital symptom, Hypochondria and Loss of insight were considered as another somstization dimension with loss of insight, which could be named as Somatic Delusion. Analysis of variance of each factors did not manifest any significant differences by sexes except factor 5 and by social classes without exception. The analysis of variance of each factors by diagnostic subgroups was resulted in significantly different factor loadings except factor 4. The Factor 4, somatization, was possibly considered as a unique charcteristic of depressive symptom in Korea. Table of factor score coefficients for culculating factor scores was preserted.
